If you push a green toolbar you're not an SEO. SEO has also really helped third world workers get high wages (relatively speaking). But you there are scammers still out there.

I just ran across your article today and found it fascinating. I wrote a piece last year regarding search engines and oppressed people of Third World countries. It's such a shame that out cherished industry has melted into becoming a frenzy to push a little green PR bar as hope to increased rankings.

Any low budget SEO means IMMEDIATELY the webmaster can spend 2 hours online and read and do their changes themselves. Easy.

I'm also seeing a new trend. The 'Guarantee or Money Back' claim. Anybody see it/deal with it? I think scam right off the bat.

I've just noticed your site in your SEOchat signature, the design is great and there is a delightful lack of hype in your content.

I agree wholeheartedly with the points you make about the quantity of self styled SEOs out there (...we all are), but in my opinion, their presence is actually beneficial for the real pros. The majority of companies are unaware that they need SEO and what differentiates good from bad professionals - foreign low-budget and local amateur SEOs provide an introduction to SEO itself, and to the criteria of a true professional.

As for differentiation, I have come across several SEOs who leverage their previous career: librarians, copywriters, economists/statisticians and various scientists are some SEOs that I have read about, and each one emphasizes their unique skill in order to differentiate. Differentiation is already happening, and once the market for SEO matures, so it will take on the traits of a mature market... it just needs time.
