Nofollow itself won't block bots or spammy messages, it just won't pass along PR to those web sites. Really, only bots that want to obey nofollow will listen for it.

The only good way of using 'nofollow' would be for people running forums or popular blogs and I believe what ever you do on internet gets listed, archived somewhere so it's not matter of hiding links instead it's just related to maintaining a good PR

Please design your web pages your way and the correct way, not Google's way or the way your cousin does it. Adhering to the current standards at http://www.w3.org is all that is required for the proper coding of web pages.
