Last week I was the top tweet in #yyc for a few days cause of a picture I took in Kensington.
Check out the @nenshi graffiti i saw in kesington! #yyc #calgary https://twitpic.com/33o4p3
Here’s the pic in case you haven’t seen it.

I want to point out how this picture could launch someone’s career and that social media was the method to spread the art like wildfire. All for free by the way :P
Firstly, how the tweeting worked.
I knew two things before I tweeted: a) I had some Nenshi followers in my account and those who weren’t would search for @nenshi; b) I used the hastag #yyc which gave folks in Calgary who were browsing a chance to catch the tweet. The tweet was now accessible to the right people.
And then it caught on fire. People were interactive with the tweet (it helped I attached a picture obviously) and RT to their networks.
In a matter of an hour the image had been viewed 1000+ times and was retweeted by Alderman and news people. Within two hours radio stations put it up on their Facebook and were contacting me to talk to the artists.
The buzz is still flowing, more radio stations are asking me for contact details.
Here’s the thing–I do’nt know the artists!
You can contact them yourself, two of them from this group did the piece: www.fairstyle.ca
The beauty of social media is you can capture attention (eyes) quickly in ways you NEVER could. Twitter and Facebook launched these guys’ careers. They actually have had some good stuff in the past, but the walls are a type of portfolio builder for them, and they now have received recognition they never could’ve attained on their own.
So now what?
If I was the artists I would immediately put up my own Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, emails, bios, everything! People want more and they’re eager to follow. I would also put up some ‘packages’ for art work on buildings. A great way to make some cash, but an even better method of creating a personal brand has risen and Erwin and co. would be nuts not to capitalize since this buzz won’t last forever.
So the creation has captured eyes, and now it’s time to convert. Hope these guys convert….
